“He’s been working for 20 years to turn me into a fashion icon, and year after year, he won’t give up!” said pantsuit devotee Hillary Clinton of Oscar de la Renta at the Carnegie Hall Medal of Excellence gala honoring the top designer.

De la Renta has said he pushed Anna Wintour to put Clinton on the cover of Vogue as first lady in 1998.

Bill Clinton added at the Plaza shindig — where guests included Diane von Furstenberg, Barry Diller, Michael Bloomberg and Ralph Lauren — “Here I am, just a guy from Arkansas, and suddenly my wife was on the cover of Vogue!”

Enjoying Julio Iglesias perform afterward were Sanford Weill, Mercedes Bass and Goldman Sachs’ Valentino Carlotti.
