A member of the royal family of Qatar is one of the international jet-setters looking to splash out at Art Basel. We hear Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, 24, the youngest son of the Emir of Qatar, has allotted $5 million to a creative consultant, Malcolm Harris, to buy works by up-and-coming artists. Harris will also be scouring the Miami fair’s many satellite shows, including the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) and Miami Design District. Al-Thani’s sister Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani has been called one of the art world’s most influential figures as chair of Qatar’s Museums Authority and founder of the Doha Film Institute.
