Philanthropists shocked over Somaly Mam scandal

New York philanthropists have reacted in shock to the news that sex-slave crusader Somaly Mam had quit her own foundation amid revelations she faked her life story.

The Cambodian claimed she was sold into sexual slavery, raped and abused for years.

She wrote a memoir, launched the Somaly Mam Foundation, and has raised millions to help other girls.

A Newsweek cover story alleges that parts of her story were fabricated.

Sharon Bush, whose daughter Lauren was honored by the foundation in 2010, told us, “It is shocking. Somaly Mam seemed so believable. A lot of people donated money to the foundation because of her story. I just hope the money went to the right place and the right people.”
