New York society is mourning the death of Cynthia Lufkin, the wife of Wall Street great Dan Lufkin, who sadly passed away at Sloan-Kettering on Tuesday following a brave battle against cancer. She was 51 years old with three young children. Cynthia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 when she was 32 weeks pregnant, and her daughter was delivered early so she could begin treatment. Since then, she dedicated much of her time to fund raising for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Memorial Sloan-Kettering. She told New York Social Diary of how the diagnosis changed her, “I would say definitely a new sense of appreciation . . . maybe a compassion. And for me [to move] in a direction of philanthropy, which is very gratifying, and I feel a need to do it to show women who have been recently diagnosed that you do get through it and life does go on.” She funded the Cynthia Lufkin Fitness and Seminar Room at Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center, creating a space where patients can participate in exercise, therapy and art programs. She was honored in 2008 with the American Cancer Society Mother of the Year Award and also served on the board of the Women’s Committee of the Central Park Conservancy. Her friend Somers Farkas told us, “Cyn’s advocacy, altruism and undeniable strength made her a blessing to the world; her caring, joy and warmth embraced all who had the privilege of knowing her. Cyn and Dan had a true love affair — their shared love for one another and for their children was evident. God now has another angel in heaven.” Cynthia is survived by her husband, a founder of investment banking firm Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette, her three children, Schuyler Hazard, Aster Lee Lufkin, Daniel Patrick Lufkin, her mother, Joyce Ford and her brother, Don Henry. There will be a service at the Dune Church in Southampton, Friday, July 12, at 4 p.m.
