Renowned androgynous model Andreja Pejic , formerly known as Andrej, is paving the way for others.

The 22-year-old Elle cover girl, who once modeled both male and female clothes, revealed to People that she underwent sex reassignment surgery earlier this year.

“I always dreamed of being a girl,” she said, recalling her childhood as Andrej. “One of my earliest memories is spinning around in my mom’s skirt trying to look like a ballerina.”

When pressed about her surgery, Pejic took a page from Laverne Cox’s book and opted to not address specifics, saying, “what’s in between anyone’s legs is not who they are.”

The Serbia-born model also added comments about her transition to her Facebook account.

“I think we all evolve as we get older and that’s normal but I like to think that my recent transition hasn’t made me into a different individual,” wrote the catwalk queen. “Same person, no difference at all just a different sex I hope you can all understand that.”

In addition to thanking her supporters, she took a moment to direct her comments to non-gender-conforming youth.

“I know it’s hard, I’ve been there, but remember it’s your right to be accepted as what you identify with — you deserve the same respect as any other human being on this planet. As a transgendered woman I hope to show you that after transition (a life-saving process) one can be happy and successful in their new chapter without having to alienate the past,” she said. “Most importantly differences should not equal divisions, let’s stand together in union.”
