Tumblr CEO David Karp the buzz of Webbys

David Karp, the 26-year-old whose Tumblr site was acquired by Yahoo for $1.1 billion, had Cipriani Wall Street buzzing at Tuesday’s Webby Awards. “When I was 26, I sold an ounce of weed for $180. Welcome to the club,” host Patton Oswalt joked, shoving his hands in Karp’s pockets for change. Arianna Huffington announced, “The theme at this year’s Webbys is ‘Winning is Huge,’ a k a ‘The Story of David Karp.’ ” Adding her advice to the mogul, “Soak it all in, because then come the lawsuits.” Karp, there with his mother, was low-key. “ I don’t even know how much money it is,” Karp told us (Forbes estimates his take of the deal at just less than $200 million). “I swear, I haven’t given it a moment of thought.” The tech phenomenon has had some unexpected calls of congratulations. “My math tutor was one of the first people to call me,” he said. “It was out of the blue.” As for George Stephanopoulos calling him a hipster, he thinks it’s funny. “I appreciated it,” he told us, asking of his outfit, “Does the hoodie hurt or help? My shirt is almost plaid.”
