Brooklyn rapper Talib Kweli was pummeled by ice onstage at his concert at Gramercy Theater Wednesday night for design brand Ben Sherman’s Very Important Plectrum initiative to raise money for LifeBeat. A 20-something, flannel-clad man in the audience threw ice at Kweli toward the end of his performance. An upset Kweli walked off, but the heckler hustled backstage to explain himself. According to Kweli’s rep, the ice-tosser told the rapper he was a fan of punk rock and was sorry if he offended Talib, but “that’s what we do on the punk rock scene, to show mad love, we throw things.” Kweli accepted the apology and later invited the heckler onstage with him. As Kweli kicked off his encore, the punk fan attempted to dance to the hip-hop music, but his moves were slightly wooden, described by one attendee as an “uncoordinated white-boy dance.” Joel Madden and DJ DL also performed.
