Patton Oswalt skewers Bitcoin at Webby Awards

Comedian Patton Oswalt hosted Monday’s Webby Awards at Cipriani Wall Street with a few pointed jokes about Bitcoin.

“Any Bitcoin people out there right now? Are you broke or wealthy right now?” he asked. “Every time I turn on the news, the twin Herman Munster guys [Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss] from ‘Social Network’ are telling me to put all my money in King Joffrey dollars. I’m sorry, it’s hard to get excited about a currency that’s only useful for buying weed from the V for Vendetta people.”

The Webbys, which honor excellence on the Internet, poked fun by announcing the demise of the “selfie,” giving it a memoriam-style video set to Green Day’s “Time of Your Life,” with pictures hashtagged #funeralselfie.

The crowd included Taylor Schilling, Charlie Rose, members of the Jamaican bobsled team, astronaut Kathryn Sullivan and Patti Smith, who presented the Person of the Year award to Banksy.

Oswalt accepted for the absent and mysterious artist, reading his four-word acceptance speech: “Somebody painted over it.”
