Tourists in town for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade thought their eyes were playing tricks on them outside the Plaza Hotel on Monday, even before any Jameson or Bushmills started to flow.

“The Plaza Hotel mistakes the Indian flag for the Irish flag,” exclaimed one tweet regarding the orange, white and green tricolor flying outside the building — which on further inspection wasn’t the Irish flag at all, but the very similar flag of India that features the same colors with a small blue wheel at its center.

A Plaza insider explained, “It’s been up for quite a bit of time and was not hung in error. Some scaffolding came down in January and the flag has been flying since then.”
The Plaza Hotel is owned by Subrata Roy, head of India’s Sahara Group.

But the flag could come down anyway: Reports say Roy, who’s cooling his heels in a New Delhi jail for allegedly refusing to pay billions to investors, may look to shop the property.
