Anjelica Huston sold a few copies of her memoir, “A Story Lately Told,” by leaking some highlights at a lunch at the Bedford Post, actress Carey Lowell’s restaurant and inn in Westchester County.
The ladies who lunch enjoyed smoked-salmon tea sandwiches and wine, as Anjelica told how her father John Huston missed her birth because he was in the Belgian Congo filming “The African Queen” with Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart.
When Anjelica was 17, her ballerina mom, Enrica Soma, died suddenly in a car crash. “I didn’t quite know what to do with myself,” she said. “I thought my father might put me in a convent. I wasn’t really cut out for that.”
She quickly moved to New York, where she was Marianne Faithfull’s understudy for Tony Richardson’s “Hamlet” — “I was a lady-in-waiting, desperately waiting for Marianne Faithfull to fall ill,” the actress joked.
Anjelica is planning to write another memoir, focusing on her Hollywood years, including her relationship with Jack Nicholson. “That’s a chapter or 10,’’ she said.
Writing the book came easy, she added, because it’s “all about me.”
