Chaz Bono, the transgender son of Cher, has called off his engagement to Jennifer Elia, his girlfriend of six years.
“[They] are no longer a couple,” Bono’s rep tells TMZ. “They leave this relationship with great love, respect and affection toward one another. No further amplification will be forthcoming and they ask that you respect their privacy at this time.”
The split is surprising, as Elia stuck by Bono through his female-to-male gender transition, which began in 2008 and ended two years later. Furthermore, Elia recently cheered Bono on throughout his run on “Dancing with the Stars.”
The couple’s relationship was the subject of the documentary “Becoming Chaz,” which screened at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and later aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network. During the movie, Bono proposed to Elia atop the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington.
A rep for Bono had no further comment.
