Anne Hathaway living on 500 calories a day for film: report

Anne Hathaway has been ordered to lose 16 pounds in less than a month for her role as Fantine in the “Les Misérables,” reports say.

The Daily Mirror reports that Hathaway is eating just 500 calories a day in fruit and protein shakes, in order to slim down for a death scene in the Tom Hooper film which began filming this month in England.

“Anne is playing a destitute factory worker [and] lady of the night. Unfortunately, she only has 15 to 20 days to lose as much weight as possible – up to [16 pounds] – because she’s been filming the scenes showing her fit and healthy, almost slightly chubby,” a source tells the paper. “It’s not ideal but, as with any high-budget movie, there are strict time constraints.”

Because it is a lot to lose, Hathaway is consuming very little.

“She is literally eating nothing more than a couple of apples a day, and some protein – mainly in the form of a shake,” the source alleges. “Anne knows the risk of such an extreme diet and will undergo weekly medicals to make sure everything is still functioning as it should do.”

Hathaway’s rep, however, says this report is greatly exaggerated. “She is on a special diet but is not looking to lose that much weight, and is consuming more than 500 calories a day,” he tells the Web site Gossip Cop.

This isn’t the first time Hathaway has dieted for a role. Last August, Hathaway told Chelsea Handler that she was struggling to fit into Catwoman’s suit for her role in “The Dark Knight Rises.”

“The catsuit’s unforgiving, man,” said Hathaway. “I’m a vegetarian and right now, I’m living on kale and dust for the training.”
