January Jones secret to energy on ‘Mad Men’ set: her placenta

It’s hard to imagine icy Betty Draper hiring a doula or taking pills made of her own placenta. But new mom January Jones said these two things were essential in allowing her to keep up her energy while filming the new season of “Mad Men.”

“I have a great doula who makes sure I’m eating well, with vitamins and teas, and with placenta capsulation,” Jones said during a press junket for “Mad Men,” which began its new season last night. “Your placenta gets dehydrated and made into vitamins.”

Before having her son, Xander Dane Jones, in September, Jones says that she never would have considered taking pills made of her placenta.

“It’s something I was very hesitant about,” explained Jones, People reports. “But we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas.”

Jones reveals that when she began filming the season, her son was still very young. Rather than leave him at home, Jones opted to bring him to set.

“I think I went back to set six or seven weeks after, so he was really little,” she said. “I had the baby and the baby nurse in their own room so I could go back and feed him every two hours. If I I felt like he needed me, or if he needed to eat, or even if I just needed a squeeze because I was having separation issues, I would go back and see him. It was such a blessing that I wasn’t separated from him.”

Jones says that playing notoriously cold Betty Draper makes people feel pleasantly surprised by her warmth toward her son.

Jones joked, “What’s nice is that the expectations for my parenting is very low, so I can really only exceed the expectations.”
