Andrew Garfield blames Oscar producers for Batkid ‘snub’

Andrew Garfield’s lawyers claim it was Academy Awards producers, and not the actor, who kept a 5-year-old boy with cancer from appearing at the show.

The “Spider-Man” star was supposed to take the stage Sunday with Miles Scott, who has come to be known as “Batkid” after the city of San Francisco let him play superhero there.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Science had arranged with the Make-a-Wish Foundation to further make Miles’ dreams come true.

“The Academy was going to make him an official superhero during the Oscar ceremony. Andrew Garfield was going to appoint him Batkid,” said a well-placed source.

But after watching the dress rehearsal on Saturday, the producers decided the segment didn’t work and asked Garfield, who had script approval, to rewrite the bit.

Garfield’s lawyers at Lavely & Singer denied that Garfield threw a “tantrum” and behaved like a “spoiled brat,” as one source described the actor.

The Academy said in a statement: “Due to the nature of a live show, hard decisions sometimes must be made which require the Academy to cut segments due to the logistics of production.”

The producers decided at 1 a.m. on Sunday morning to cut the segment, but paid for Miles and his family to go to Disneyland on Monday.

“Andrew Garfield understood why his segment had to be omitted, and he drove to Disneyland on Monday to spend time with Miles Scott and his family,” the Academy said.

Garfield’s lawyers confirmed that he declined an invitation to appear solo on the Oscars telecast.

Producers were able to get “Captain America” star Chris Evans to introduce a segment on superheroes.

“Andrew did nothing but give his time to Miles. He didn’t snub this kid,” one lawyer said. “The producers decided the bit didn’t flow. It didn’t work. It wasn’t because Andrew refused anything.”
