Okla. native Carrie Underwood donates $1M to tornado relief

Carrie Underwood donated $1 million to the Red Cross after a monster tornado tore through her home state.

The country superstar grew up in Chectota, Okla and tweeted how it was “devastating” to see how the horrific twister nearly wiped out the town of Moore.

In the wake of the tragedy, Underwood announced her pledge of $1 million to the Sooner State.

“I have watched the devastation in my home state of Oklahoma over the past several days with great sadness,” she said in a statement. “With the help of my fans who attended my concerts over the past year, we can offer the Red Cross a little extra help in comforting those affected by the recent tornados.”

Neal Litvack, chief development officer for the Red Cross, said, “The impact of the tornados in Oklahoma and the Midwest was devastating and the road to recovery will be long for many families. Through the generosity of Carrie, the American Red Cross can quickly respond with shelter, food and comfort now, and with lasting help as they move toward recovery.”

Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant has also pledged $1 million with the help of Nike. Oklahoman baseball star Matt Kemp has pledged $250,000, and comedian David Spade has offered $200,000 to the cause.
