Kanye West’s attempt to beam his new music video on The Alamo went bust over the weekend, even after hundreds gathered in front of the historical shrine in anticipation of the screening.
West marketed the event on his Web site and on social media, telling fans to gather at the San Antonio landmark to watch a projection of his “New Slaves” video.
According to MySanAntonio.com, a crowd of 500 fans, protesters and law enforcement gathered at the event at 11:30 p.m.
However, no permit for the projection had been issued, San Antonio officers stated. Disappointed fans headed home around midnight as the non-event progressed.
Some locals were upset following the guerilla marketing attempt. Texas National Movement member Angie Alexander told the publication, “It’s very disrespectful to the people who died there.”
Mark Loeffler, spokesperson for the Texas General Land Office, the Alamo’s caretaker, added, “It’s sad that people have such little respect for the Alamo.”
West, who performed his new single during the “Saturday Night Live” season finale, organized screenings of the video at landmarks around the world.
