Gala catches fire for social

A socialite nearly went up in flames at Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s gala Monday night, but was saved by a quick-thinking Metropolitan Museum of Art guard. Jean Shafiroff arrived at the Met party in a “huge, red Oscar de la Renta ball gown,” a spy said. But when the philanthropist “swept by votive candles that were surrounding the reflecting pool at the Temple of Dendur,” her frock’s petticoated poof caught on fire. “Jump in the pool!” advised one hysterical guest, but a guard named Judy “rushed over, stomped on the sparks and pulled Jean away from the candles,” said a witness. Shafiroff hugged the staffer twice and exclaimed, “If it wasn’t for you, I would have gone up in flames!” before proceeding to her assigned table “as if nothing had happened.” Other guests included gala chairs Julia Koch and Karen LeFrak — with their respective husbands, David and Richard — as well as Elvis Costello and Diana Krall, Crystal Renn, Tory Burch, Zac Posen, Muffie Potter Aston, Joanne de Guardiola, Jamee Gregory and Janna Bullock.
