Sandra Bernhard’s mouth just got bigger

Sandra Bernhard was pleasantly surprised when she returned from a weekend performance in New England to find a huge billboard with her face staring down at her, mid-shout, right in her own Chelsea neighborhood.

“All of a sudden, boom! It’s so cool. There I am with my big mouth wide open again,” Sandra told me.

The billboard, overlooking the High Line at 19th Street and 10th Avenue, for the Rubin Museum of Art also features the image of an open-mouthed Buddhist god — “where the spiritual meets the heavenly,” Bernhard said.

The museum, dedicated to Tibetan art, is located in the old Barneys on Seventh Avenue at 17th Street, prompting Bernhard to quip: “As the Dalai Lama once said, the closing of the downtown Barneys was one of the greatest tragedies of 1997.”

The funny lady will bring her spiritualism to Guild Hall in East Hampton on June 20.
