Richard Gere jokingly gave Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter — who’s also Gere’s co-star in “Arbitrage” — credit for his Golden Globe Best Actor nomination yesterday. “There’s a scene at the end of the movie,” Gere explained to us at a lunch for the film at Monkey Bar yesterday. “I’m OK [in the movie] up to this point. A couple good scenes, nothing great. But I walk into a restaurant, and there’s Graydon, and he carries me. How long is the scene? Three minutes. [But] it was the difference between a nomination and no nomination.” Gere, who won a Globe for “Chicago,” said he was out of the country when nominations were announced. “I was in India, and my phone wasn’t working,” he said. “But when I got to the coast in south India, all of a sudden my phone worked. I turned it on and had 50 messages. My first thought was that something was wrong, and then it was all ‘congratulations.’ I totally forgot about it.” Also at the Brioni-sponsored lunch: writer/director Nicholas Jarecki, Paul Haggis and Melissa Leo.
