Day Five: The Moments That Made You ‘Scream’

We made it! A horror event 11 years in the making is officially assaulting cinemas all across the country — I am talking about, of course, the release of “Scream 4!” A day that PopWrap has been equally anticipating and dreading since the original was a landmark day in my young life.

In celebration, I wanted to take a look back at the good, bad and ugly of this genre-defining franchise. Over the course of this week, PopWrap will be revisiting and ranking the moments that made you laugh, jump and scream. Monday started with The Best Chase Sequences, Tuesday brought The Best Murder-Free Moments, Wednesday welcomed The Worst of “Scream,” Thursday carved up The Best Characters and today is the debut of…

The 10 Most Memorable Kills

Yes, that’s right, for the final installment in PopWrap’s “Scream” Week we’re kicking things up a notch and doubling our efforts to talk about the most important element in any horror franchise: the murders!

While some genre films are built solely around the eviscerating, one of the things I’ve always loved about the “Scream” trilogy is that the murders never came at the expense of the plot. Well, almost never. Stupid Tom…..

But before we recap the greatest grisly guttings, enjoy this quick refresher:

OK, with that out of the way, here are, in very particular order, PopWrap’s 10 Most Memorable Kills (and a brief explanation why)

10. Stab! Stab! Stab! in “Scream 4”
The eagerly anticipated 2011 edition doesn’t really offer up much in the way of creative murders, but the hyper-meta opening features multiple attacks across a variety of “Stab” sequels and all that bloodshed adds up to one seriously killer entry.

9. Mickey in “Scream 2”
Gale and Sidney were never close, but watching them team up and fill the second-string killer with bullets was a thing of beauty.

8. Cici in “Scream 2”
The sequel’s most elongated “what’s your favorite scary movie” scene was saved for a sorority girl who had the misfortune of sharing a first name with an original character.

7. Stu in “Scream”
It was rather fitting for this pop culture obsessed film to kill someone with a television set.

6. Jennifer in “Scream 3”
Because everything this beautiful nightmare did and said made this flimsy film infinitely better. Plus, she was the killer in “Stab 3” and assumed that would save her life in “Scream 3.”

5. Maureen in “Scream 2”
While her actual murder isn’t that memorable, the idea of being surrounded by a sea of people who are so jacked up on soda and adrenaline that they don’t notice you’re being stabbed is pretty terrifying.

4. Randy in “Scream 2”
Perhaps the most emotionally devastating death of all ten, but our boy went out on a high note: growing a pair of balls … before having Ghostface lop them off.

3. Billy in “Scream”
Killers always come back from the dead and that was never more true than with the original where Billy was stabbed, shot and then shot again before actually expiring.

2.Tatum in “Scream”
Although plenty of people died between Casey and Tatum, none were dispatched in such a creative or brutal manner.

1. Casey in “Scream”
This is where it all began — the calls! the ghost mask! the trivia! — and it’s hard to forget your first time!
