Will “Dark Knight” Sink “Titanic?”

Now that “The Dark Knight” has smashed almost every box-office record in existence, Hollywood’s starting to look at the biggest record of all and wonder if the new Batman movie has the staying power to unseat “Titanic” as the most successful movie of all time.

The film, which opened one week ago, has already earned more than “Batman Begins” did during its entire theatrical run ($205 mill) and reached the $200 million mark the fastest. “Titanic’s” total domestic box-office is just slightly north of $600 million, so “The Dark Knight” has a daunting challenge ahead. But when you take into account that it’s still pulling in $18-20 million a weekday, it’s looking good for the caped crusader.

This weekend will be the truest indication of the film’s chances of toppling the Oscar winning opus since “TDK” faces some stiff sci-fi competition from “The X-Files: I Want to Believe.” But will all the bat-fans who couldn’t snag seats at regular or IMAX showings last week (my 9:30 am Saturday show was sold out!) still be chomping at the bit to get a glimpse of Gotham? I think so, which should explain the serious scowl on James Cameron’s face right about now.
