Every year The Hollywood Foreign Press Association hands out The Golden Globes to the best films and performances over the last 365 days. And every year actors campaign shamelessly to be one of the few singled out. Now, I don’t want to say that their votes can be bought, but The HFPA (comprised of overseas journalists) are easily charmed by a pretty girl or a cool guy. So the luncheons they hold throughout the year, such as yesterday’s, become a time for stars to stump hardcore. You know, so when it comes time for the members to cast a ballot, their check mark gets placed next to Chris Pine’s name in the Best Actor, Drama category. Not because his performance in “Star Trek” was one of the year’s five best, but because he told a killer story about some hookers in Vegas that cracked up the male HFPA members.

Then there is Best Actress in a Comedic TV series wannabe Eva Longoria, who is so charming she could sell a bra to Lindsay Lohan. And that is a girl who hates brassieres!

Sometimes the HFPA gets it right — like they did in 2003 when Evan Rachel Wood’s performance in “Thirteen” was named one of the year’s best. Perhaps she’s hoping they recognize her again, this time in the TV category, for her work as vampire queen Sophie-Anne on “True Blood!”

Dylan McDermott was a Globes golden boy, wracking up three back-to-back nominations for “The Practice.” A fact he probably wanted to remind them of now that he’s back in the Best Drama race with his TNT show, “Dark Blue.”

In “Adam,” the main character is a man with Asperger syndrome who is looking for love. Adam’s portrayer, Hugh Dancy, is a man looking for his first Golden Globe nomination.

November brings the hotly anticipated film “Women in Trouble” and Carla Gugino’s buzzy performance as a porn star. For the record, female actors playing characters with porny professions are to voters what male actors playing characters with mental disorders are.

Then you have actors who don’t currently have projects prepping for release, but would just like to stay on voter’s minds for when they do. Like Rose McGowan.

And 2005 nominee (for “Phantom of the Opera”), Emmy Rossum.

Winning a Golden Globe can elevate an actor from obscurity to the A-list. Take for example Jennifer Garner’s season one “Alias” win or Michelle Pfeiffer’s “Fabulous Baker Boys” acceptance speech. Here’s hoping an upcoming telecast features Kerry Washington ascending the stage, and the Hollywood ladder. After all she is one of the actors we wish were bigger stars !
