At an appearance sponsored by Popchips at Duane Reade at 61st and Lexington Avenue, an elderly woman came up to him and gave him a batch of homemade cookies in exchange for two autographed baseballs for her grandkids. “She said, ‘I am a huge fan, I made you some cookies so you can kick Philly’s butt,’ ” a witness recounted. “Gardner laughed, said thank you, then signed her balls.”
