Controversial artist Cindy Sherman’s MoMA retrospective got one female guest so worked up Tuesday night, she slapped a pal across the face while arguing over the show. The exclusive preview drew a mix of art insiders (Terence Koh, Klaus Biesenbach), indie icons (Debbie Harry, John Waters), designers (Narciso Rodriguez, Johan Lindeberg), actors (Kim Cattrall, Molly Ringwald) and (inhabiting her own category) Martha Stewart. One anonymous couple perusing Sherman’s edgy work was overheard having a hushed discussion about “sexism” and “misogyny” when the woman suddenly slapped her older male companion, exclaiming, “I can’t believe you think you have to have lived in the photograph to understand it!” (We’re assuming this was not a piece of opportunistic performance art.) Guests also mingled to booming tracks from a DJ, and artist Chuck Close wore a bowler and wild suit that could only be described as “A Clockwork Orange” meets the Riddler.
