A turf war broke out at NBC between Brian Williams and Matt Lauer over who’d land the coveted annual pre-Super Bowl interview with President Obama. Sources say camps from Lauer’s “Today” show and Williams’ “Rock Center” jockeyed for the Obama chat, calling White House brass to push each anchor over the other. “Brian needs this interview right now,” a source said, referencing the sagging ratings on his new show. “Giving it to Matt shows that pleasing him is a bigger priority at NBC.” Lauer has made it known he’s uncertain if he’ll stay at the network after his contract expires in December. An NBC rep said, “The request from Brian to the White House was for a completely different opportunity. Matt’s interview with President Obama, when NBC hosts the Super Bowl, has become a bit of tradition for us.” Lauer interviewed Obama once before the game, in 2009. NBC also broadcast the Super Bowl in 1998, but then-President Clinton was not interviewed since the game was played at the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
