Rory McIlroy sends out wedding invitations, dumps fiancée

Golf pro Rory McIlroy called off his engagement to Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki — just days after sending out wedding invitations, he announced on Wednesday.

In his startling statement, the fickle 25-year-old title-winner ’fessed up to dumping Wozniacki late in the game — a year after breaking up with her temporarily because she posted an embarrassing photo of him drooling online.

“The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails,” the Northern Irishman said.

He added, “I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had.”

The high-profile sports couple started dating in 2011. McIlroy broke it off in April 2012 — just days after Wozniacki posted a nerdy photo of him sleeping with his mouth open on Instagram, friends of the couple said at the time.

But the lovebirds got back together and were engaged in Australia on New Year’s Eve.

The axed engagement stunned fans, who took to Twitter to slam McIlroy as a flake.

“Maybe Caroline is lucky it ended now, rather than later, if he is such an insensitive d-ck,”@murraytennisfan blasted.

“I just really don’t like Rory McIlroy anymore,” tweeted tennis fan @TheSliceTweets.

McIlroy backtracked later, calling the split “mutual.”

“It is quite a difficult time for Caroline and myself. It was mutual and we both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us,” an emotional McIlroy said while on tour at Wentworth in England on Wednesday.

“Look, I’m no different than anyone else. Everyone has been through breakups, and it’s obviously very, very difficult . . . Time to move on and I’ve said all that I need to say,” he added, biting back tears.

Despite his change of heart, he plans to keep his head in the game, he said.

“But look, I’m here to try and concentrate on this week and answer questions about golf, and that’s what I’m going to do. But you know, at least when I get inside the ropes, I will just try and concentrate on the shot at hand,” he added.

“I’m not going to lie. It’s going to be very difficult.”

McIlroy won the 2011 US Open and the US PGA Championship in 2012.

Wozniacki, 23, won the 2006 Wimbledon Girls’ Singles title and was runner-up at the 2009 US Open.

Both have been ranked No. 1 in their respective sports.

A spokesman for Wozniacki didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment.

On Wednesday, her Twitter profile still read, “Fiancée, daughter, sister, tennis player.”
