Artist Zapata hosts celebs at his townhouse

Domingo Zapata threw open the doors to his elegant 1850s Gramercy Park townhouse and studio to a beautiful crowd Saturday night.

Designer Catherine Malandrino, director and screenwriter Paul Haggis, Paolo Zampolli, plus a fashionable mix of models, musicians and bon vivants mingled in his mansion filled with his own artworks.

Zapata’s paintings sit alongside rigid suits of armor and matador jackets transformed into sculptures. Even the ceilings of his Old World glamour residence are covered with giant colorful illustrations.

The Spanish-born artist, who counts Leonardo DiCaprio and George Soros as clients, told us, “Why lie on the sofa looking at a white ceiling when you can look at art?”

During a weekend of art shows including Frieze and the Downtown Fair, collectors — including Malandrino, Haggis and ex-Rangers player Rod Gilbert — were out in full force and bought over $600,000 of Zapata works during the party.
