More than ‘Plot’ revealed

“That was what book parties used to be like in the ’90s,” enthused a guest after Farrar, Straus and Giroux’s luxe shindig for Jeffrey Eugenides’ new novel, “The Marriage Plot.” They were referring as much to the well-stocked bar as to the litany of literary lions who showed up Wednesday at the Top of the Standard, including Martin Amis, Jonathan Franzen, Mary Karr and Zadie Smith. Completing the scene, Jhumpa Lahiri, Meg Wolitzer, Sally Singer and Lynn Nesbit were also there, and the much ballyhooed book debuted at No. 9 on USA Today’s best-seller list the next morning. But the real buzz at the party, at least among the B-list, was that a Farrar, Straus staffer managed to accidentally blast the event’s invite list with all the e-mail addresses showing. So any go-getters in the crowd were content knowing their iPhone address books now contained deets for Amis and company, as well as authors Ian McEwan, Gary Shteyngart, Jonathan Safran Foer and Siri Hustvedt.
