Kate Winslet put on bra before fleeing Branson fire

Kate Winslet isn’t sure why her instinct while fleeing the fire at Richard Branson’s Necker Island home in August was to first put on a bra.

“[It] was like a movie,” the actress tells “The Graham Norton Show” tonight. “In disastrous moments you do the strangest things … I started to put on a bra and thought ‘that’s going to take too long’ so off came the bra on came the T-shirt.”

The fire started when lightening hit the $70 million home in the Caribbean. Winslet was one of 20 guests staying there and proved herself a hero when she awoke to the smoke and swung into action, grabbing her kids and Branson’s elderly mother. “I grabbed the children and I picked up granny,” she recalled. “We were at the top of some slippery stone steps.”

They all made it out safely.

Branson earlier recounted Winslet’s heroic moment to CBS News.

“I was woken up with people screaming. I was in the house right next door to the great house, about 10 yards away, and looked over, saw the whole house engulfed in flames, and just ran stark naked to the house to try to get people out. I had my daughter, my mother, lots of nephews and nieces,” he said. “My mother’s 90 years old … [Winslet] picked my mother up and carried her, carried her out of the house.”
