The night before his amazing no-hitter against the St. Louis Cardinals, Mets pitching ace Johan Santana was helping his former teammate Carlos Beltran, now a Cardinal, raise money to build a baseball academy in Beltran’s native Puerto Rico. At the packed fund-raiser on Thursday at trendy restaurant Sofrito, Santana and Beltran huddled, talking at length, posing for pictures and signing autographs, but, according to a spy, “not letting the fact that they are now on opposing teams impede their longtime friendship.” Santana even donated his baseball uniform and pitching glove to the live auction that would have probably fetched many more dollars had attendees known what would happen the next night.
