Robin Roberts moves GMA medical leave one day early

“Good Morning America” cohost Robin Roberts has taken her medical leave a day early.

According to ABC News, Roberts decided to start her medical leave early so she could fly home to Mississippi to be with her ailing mother, Lucimarian, and her family as Hurricane Issac continues to ravage the Gulf Coast

“I’m having to move up my schedule,” Roberts said this morning on GMA. “I am very blessed. Forty percent of Americans can’t even take a sick day, and here I know that I’m going to have a job when I come back.”

The anchor has been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). She said she will be checking into the hospital next Tuesday for a bone marrow transplant.

Roberts said she has no timetable for her return.

Her final words on GMA, “I love you and I’ll see you soon.”

A variety of television personalities will be filling in during Roberts’ absence from the popular morning program, including Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Barbara Walters, Kelly Ripa, the cast of “Modern Family,” Chris Rock, Rob Lowe and Oprah Winfrey.
