The Standard Hotel had a novel approach for creating its 2014 calendar: by visually interpreting “a year of our favorite guest letters, comments and requests . . . joyfully re-enacted by our staff.” A picture of a dachshund being held up in a hot-dog bun accompanies one guest’s letter, explaining that “Penny, my precious little weiner, is on a special diet and must be fed at specific times so she can take her pills,” and that the staff agreeably prepared the pooch’s food at odd hours. Another image shows a waitress holding a seemingly endless bar tab with a guest’s peculiar lament: “My girlfriend and I spent lots of money at the bar and on room service. Any compensation would be greatly appreciated.” A different month features a letter from a high-strung music journalist who checked into the Andre Balazs hotel only to discover that a “volatile pop star” whom the writer had just slammed with “an unflattering review” was staying in a nearby room. When the writer was wracked with anxiety and “completely freaked out” that the musician would “exact some kind of revenge,” a hotel staffer “kindly offered to stay up with me until I calmed down. She literally sat in my room and read to me until I passed out.” An accompanying image is of a nerdy-looking dude peacefully asleep with four maids. (There’s no mention of who the rocker might’ve been, but we’re just guessing Courtney Love.)
