Sports agent Kim Miale of Jay-Z’s Roc Nation firm has until the end of this week to respond to an NFL Players Association letter regarding the signing of Jets quarterback Geno Smith, sources tell Page Six. The NFLPA reportedly sent Miale the letter asking about Smith’s signing on Monday. The brouhaha’s over whether Jay-Z had a role in influencing Smith to choose Miale as his agent, because of a so-called “runner rule” that only an NFLPA-certified agent can recruit a player to sign for representation. The NFLPA has no jurisdiction over Jay-Z, since he’s not certified, but is looking at Miale to determine whether Smith signed under the rapper’s influence. Before joining the Roc Nation roster, Smith posted a pic of himself hanging with Jay-Z that raised eyebrows among rival agents. Jay-Z’s allowed only to handle NFL players’ off-the-field deals, such as marketing opportunities, but not their football contracts. Smith, NFL-watchers have pointed out, could have signed with Roc Nation for marketing only. A Roc Nation spokesman declined to comment.
