Philip Seymour Hoffman admits heroin abuse

Philip Seymour Hoffman admitted he’s been in rehab for heroin abuse and spent ten days at an undisclosed East Coast detox facility earlier this month after he began taking the illegal drug.

The 45-year-old actor shared with TMZ that he had been clean for 23 years prior to the relapse, which began more than a year ago with a prescription pill problem that escalated into snorting heroin.

The Oscar winner said he was snorting heroin for about a week before he realized he needed help. He told the gossip site that “a great group of friends and family” helped him get better.

Hoffman has previously spoken about his substance abuse. He told the UK’s Guardian, “It was pretty bad, you know what I mean. And I know, deep down, I still look at the idea of drinking with the same ferocity that I did back then. It’s still pretty tangible.

“I was young, I drank too much, you know, so I stopped. It’s not really complicated.

“I had no interest in drinking in moderation. And I still don’t. Just because all that time’s passed doesn’t mean maybe it was just a phase. That’s who I am.”

Hoffman is reportedly back at work shooting his next movie, “God’s Pocket” in Europe.
