Bradley Cooper: Addiction nearly sank my career

Bradley Cooper has opened up about just how bad his life was before he cracked the big time in Hollywood.

In the January issue of GQ, the 38-year-old actor said he hit an all-time low when his role in the TV show “Alias” was reduced in 2002.

“I would only work three days a week,” Cooper said.

“And then for the second season, I got even more sidelined. I was like, ‘Ugh.’ And then next thing you know, I was like, ‘I want to f—ing kill myself.'”

Cooper asked “Alias” creator, J.J Abrams, to write him out of the show so that he could pursue different projects, but he almost quit acting when he struggled to find other gigs.

“At some point, you have to come to terms with ‘The business just doesn’t want you’, you know what I mean?” Cooper said in GQ.

To add to his woes, the “American Hustle” star was also battling drug and alcohol addiction in the early 2000s which he openly admits hindered his work.

“If I continued it, I was really going to sabotage my whole life,” Cooper said.

“I think work was getting f—ed up. The one thing that I’ve learned in life is the best thing I can do is embrace who I am and then do that to the fullest extent, and then whatever happens, happens. The more steps I do to not do that, the farther I am away from fulfilling any potential I would have.”

Cooper didn’t hit the big time until 2009 when he starred in The Hangover.

Since then, he’s been the lead in a number of blockbusters, such as Limitless, The Words and The Hangover sequels.

Earlier this year he received his first Oscar nomination for his role in Silver Linings Playbook and he’s widely tipped to receive another next year for American Hustle.

The former Sexiest Man Alive and his 21-year-old model girlfriend Suki Waterhouse made their first formal appearance together as a couple at the premiere of “American Hustle” in New York City on Sunday.
