Rory McIlroy broke off his engagement to Caroline Wozniacki during a brief phone call.

The PGA star, 25, explained Wednesday: “It’s one of those things that it was a very public relationship. And I thought it was best that instead of letting it linger and [feeding] rumors, just to have it right [out] there as soon as possible.”

The golfer broke up with his tennis playing fiancée, “a day after telling her how much he loved her,” in a phone call that was “a three-minute conversation she thought was a joke,” the Times of London reports.

The report was backed up by Christopher Clarey of the New York Times.

Wozniacki’s personal life seemed to weigh on her Tuesday, as her French Open ended in a first-round defeat, the 13th-seeded player falling 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 to 64th-ranked Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.

Meanwhile, McIlroy seemed just fine, claiming victory in the European Tour’s prestigious BMW PGA Championship.

News of the two athletes’ split broke last week, just days after the couple sent out wedding invitations. The couple started dating in 2011 and rang in 2014 by getting engaged.
