Prince outperformed even the most energetic VMA artist, playing an epic set at City Winery until almost 6 a.m. yesterday. He took the stage at 3:15 a.m. breaking out “1999,” “Nothing Compares 2 U” as well as deep cuts even the most avid fan couldn’t name. Earlier in the night, when Sly and the Family Stone’s Larry Graham sat down after his set at the final show of the New Power Generation residency at City Winery, Questlove approached him, waving his arms in a “we’re not worthy” fashion. Doug E. Fresh also showed off his human beatbox, CeeLo Green nodded to the Purple One with “U Got the Look,” and Alice Smith performed with husband Citizen Cope looking on. Those who stuck it out till closer to 6 a.m. were treated to “Take Me With U” and “Raspberry Beret.” Also in the crowd were Adam Lambert, Savion Glover, singer Lalah Hathaway, and golfer Lee Westwood
. And following our story about Prince not paying his bill at Costata, his tour manager called yesterday to settle up and left a hefty $500 tip.
