Allen quietly previews ‘Bullets Over Broadway’

Woody Allen has been discreetly taking in previews of his show “Bullets Over Broadway,” prompting audience members at the St. James to crane their necks to get a glimpse of the shy director.

“I saw Woody on the steps in the back!” an excited attendee exclaimed during intermission at Saturday’s matinee.

Another guest said she spotted Allen in an aisle seat of the last row. We’re told Allen missed a few performances when he was out of town, but has otherwise been at all the previews.

A rep for the show starring Zach Braff, told us, “He does favor the stairs to the mezzanine or a seat in the back row of the orchestra, so I wouldn’t be surprised if some audience members spotted him.”

Others spotted in the crowd have included Brooke Shields, Tony Danza, Bobby Cannavale and Dianne Wiest — who won an Oscar for her role as Helen Sinclair in the 1994 movie version. The show, officially opening on Thursday, uses a pre-existing period score.

“I don’t like a contemporary music sound,” Allen said in an interview with Time. “It’s not my taste. My ear doesn’t appreciate it.”
