Alexis Bledel makes surprise appearance on ‘Mad Men’

“Mad Men” character Pete Campbell has cheated on his wife, Trudy, once again. Only this time, he cheated with actress Alexis Bledel.

The blue-eyed brunette, famous for her role in “The Gilmore Girls,” made a surprise guest appearance on “Mad Men” last night, in a racy episode titled “Lady Lazarus.” Bledel played the wife of an insurance agent who becomes friends with Campbell, the “Mad Men” villain played by Vincent Kartheiser, as the two commute on the same train. In the episode, Bledel and Kartheiser’s characters have a one-night stand.

While Bledel is known for wholesome fare, like the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” she breaks into more adult territory with her role on “Mad Men.”

“Don’t you want me,” she whispers in Kartheiser’s ear, after he drops her off at home because she has locked her keys in her car. “You can have me.”

Bledel’s guest-starring role has gotten a big reaction from “Mad Men” fans on Twitter. “I cannot handle the walking tragedy that is Pete Campbell,” one fan wrote. “I hate Pete Campbell,” wrote another.

Kartheiser, however, defends his character’s actions in a behind-the scenes video about the episode.

“He’s moved out to the country and his life is very quiet out there. It’s very one note,” says Kartheiser. “The idea of having something on the side is a mid-life crisis kind of thing. I think he has this idea of all the good things and none of the stress — the sex and adoration. Instead he finds this woman who is hard to pin down and doesn’t really want him, and he does fall for her.”

While guest-starring roles are traditionally trumpeted for weeks in advance, “Mad Men” managed to keep Bledel’s casting a secret until the premiere of the episode last night. It’s unclear if her character will return in future episodes.
