Film society cancels Tom Cruise Q&A

The Film Society of Lincoln Center canceled “An Evening With Tom Cruise” last night, which was to include a sneak preview of “Jack Reacher” and a 45-minute Q&A with the star. The decision came after the postponement of a “Reacher” premiere Saturday in Pittsburgh following the Sandy Hook school massacre. Based on author Lee Childs’ best-selling series, the film reportedly opens with a sniper gunning down five people. “Out of respect for the families who lost loved ones . . . we are postponing tonight’s event,” said a statement from the Film Society’s Rose Kuo. “We extend our love and condolences to our neighbors. Our community grieves with yours.” A Cruise retrospective at Lincoln Center will run through Thursday, and he went ahead with an appearance on “Letterman” last night. The Pittsburgh premiere is scheduled to go on tomorrow without a red carpet. Another premiere, for “Django Unchained,” was separately canceled by the Weinstein Company in LA and became a private cast-and-crew screening.
