Martha Stewart has to ‘control everything’

Martha Stewart “doesn’t trust anybody and she has to control everything,” a former employee tells the new Vanity Fair in a revealing article about what it’s like to work for the domestic goddess’ Living Omnimedia. Another former exec told VF contributing editor Suzanna Andrews, “Martha’s an omnivore. She just wants more, more, more . . . She has however many houses. Even though she has a million pieces of garden ornaments, she buys more garden ornaments. Even though she has a million trees, she buys more trees. It’s her genius and it’s in some ways her downfall — that ‘always hungry’ thing.” Another former employee says of Stewart, who recently took a pay cut from a reported $2 million to $1.8 million, “Martha is delightful, charming, brilliant, fascinating — if you are in the room alone with her. You bring a third person in and it becomes poisonous.” Final arguments are set to be heard today in Stewart’s legal battle against Macy’s, which is suing her to stop the sale of her goods at rival J.C. Penney, claiming it has an exclusive on her products.
