Demi Lovato admits to cocaine use

Demi Lovato has admitted to abusing cocaine in the past, claiming that club promoters supplied her with the drug as well as with alcohol.

While the 19-year-old star has said in the past that she entered rehab in 2010 to cope with bipolar disorder, bulimia and a habit of cutting, the former Disney star now reveals that drug use was also at play in her emotional breakdown.

“It’s something I don’t really want to talk about,” Lovato told the UK’s Fabulous magazine when asked specifically if she had been using cocaine. “What I can say is that I was depressed. I would come off stage in front of 18,000 people and suddenly be alone in a hotel room. I’d come crashing down and would try to find a way to recreate that feeling, to stay ‘up’.”

Lovato says that getting access to the drug was no problem, despite her young age.

“Promoters gave me drugs and alcohol in restaurants or clubs. They wanted me to come back so I would be seen there. They were basically kissing my ass,” says Lovato. “I thought they were my friends. I thought I was having fun. Being a celebrity can be dangerous. Nobody says ‘no’. That’s why so many end up overdosing and dying. It could definitely have happened to me.”

Lovato said that checking into rehab for three months was a true wake-up call.

“It was really, really hard and scary. I was homesick and lonely and several times I thought [bleep] it, I’m leaving,” she said. “I had 14 hours of therapy a day. I listened to music and learned to knit. When I finally left, it was like being let out of prison.”

Lovato has written extensively about her past troubles on the album “Unbroken.” But the star tells the magazine that she is not 100 percent better.

“I’m not saying I’m perfect, or fixed, but I am learning to love and accept myself,” she said. “My outlook is more positive and I am happy.”
