Jemima Kirke calls ‘Girls’ sex scenes ‘mortifying’

Jemima Kirke of the HBO series “Girls” says that she is both “mortified” by and “proud of” her sex scenes in the show.

“They are mortifying,” Kirke tells the Huffington Post, when asked about her raunchy scenes. “You’ve got hundreds of people watching.”

And Kirke is very much lowballing her show’s viewership, as 1.1 million viewers tuned in for the show’s premiere.

Still, Kirke says that she was more embarrassed filming the scenes then thinking about the number of people watching them.

“It was worse shooting it,” explains Kirke. “When I do it myself, on set, and I’m doing a real orgasm — not ‘real,’ but the way I know it sounds in real life, because I don’t know how to fake it — I’m embarrassed in front of the cameraman. That’s embarrassing.”

However, Kirke says that watching the scenes in the context of the finished show has changed how she feels about them for the better.

“For some reason, when it’s on TV, I’m proud of it as part of the work,” she says. “Now I see it as one big performance; one effort as this package of ‘Girls.’ It doesn’t embarrass me as much because it’s all related and all part of something bigger.”
