Lady Gaga sent a message during her concert in New Zealand last week that was interpreted by many as a dig at the Material Girl, saying to the crowd that “things are really different than they were 25 years ago.”
“It sometimes makes people feel better about themselves to put other people down or make fun of them or maybe make mockery of their work,” Gaga told the audience in between songs. ‘And that doesn’t make me feel good at all. That just makes me feel like I’m not being a good human being,”
“I don’t even want to fight back because it’s more important to me to keep writing music. Because that’s really all I care about, is the music.”
The Daily Mail reports Gaga spoke out days after Madonna covered her song “Born This Way,” during a rehearsal, mashing it up with Madge’s 1989 hit song “Express Yourself” on the first concert in Israel of her MDNA tour.
The two tracks have been compared since “Born this Way” was released last year Critics slammed Gaga for the song and video’s similarities to Madonna’s look and sound when her album was released.
While Gaga refrained from speaking about the comparisons, Madonna told ABC’s Cynthia McFadden during a “20/20” interview in January: “When I heard it on the radio, I said ‘that sounds very familiar’. It feels reductive.”
Though Gaga didn’t mention Madonna by name during the New Zealand show, she also told the audience: “Things are really different than they were 25 years ago, and that’s what makes “Born This Way” so relevant for me.”
Gaga is on the mend after suffering a concussion during Sunday’s Auckland concert when a backup dancer accidentally hit her over the head with a pole.
The pop singer was performing the hit “Judas” during a concert Sunday night when she received the accidental thump to the top of the head during a dance routine.
Although she continued with the rest of her set, the singer said at one point during the show that she felt like she had a concussion.
