Despite her high profile marriage and divorce from Tom Cruise, actress Katie Holmes says she is just a down-home girl at heart.
“I still think of myself as Midwestern,” she said to the New York Times while promoting her new Broadway play “Dead Accounts. “I mean, I’ve had box wine…It’s good. And it’s a lot easier to open.”
The Toledo, Ohio, native, who’s been repeatedly spotted taking the New York subway, added that she definitely identifies with her “Dead Accounts” character Lorna.
“I’m like Lorna in that my values guide me in an instinctual way, like, ‘That feels weird’ or ‘I better send a thank you,'” Holmes said about her character who has moved back home with her middle-class parents after a failed relationship. “Also, the Midwestern work ethic: You do what you do, and you don’t talk about it.”
She continued: “You don’t say, ‘Oh, I’m a doctor.’ You won’t have many friends if you do that. And when you’re in the entertainment business where you’re applauded for so many things…you can easily fall into thinking, ‘Wow, I’m really something.’ But I believe in putting your head down and doing the work.”
After a very public divorce, the “Dawson’s Creek” actress credits her supportive family to help her get through such challenging times. “I have these moments where what’s going on in my life is unbelievable, and you have to tell everyone to figure out how to respond,” she said. “My siblings and I are always on the phone saying: ‘Oh my God, what do you think? What does Mom think? What does Dad think?’ And then you act accordingly.”
“Dead Accounts,” started previews earlier this week following a delay caused by Sandy. “Dead Accounts” is about a family and their prodigal son who unexpectedly returns to his hometown of Cincinnati from New York.
