Desperate ‘Today’ brings David Copperfield to conjure up better ratings

Illusionist David Copperfield is to appear on NBC’s “Today” every Monday this month, in a bid to bring a bit of magic to the ratings. Showman Copperfield, known for making impossibilities happen — like the Statue of Liberty disappearing on television and levitating over the Grand Canyon — will be using his sleight of hand to conjure up a bump in viewers. “Today” has been getting clobbered by ABC rival “Good Morning America,” and last week was beaten by “Good Day New York” in the local key demographics. Copperfield’s first trip to the show nearly ended in drama when his plane from Las Vegas made an emergency landing in Peoria, Ill. He described the incident as “scary,” but nobody was injured.
