Kevin Phillips, a strategist for Richard Nixon before becoming Independent, says he’s so disillusioned with politics that he has no advice for the Republican Party. “The Republicans have one big asset — it’s called the Democrats,” he told us last week. “The Democrats have one big asset — it’s called the Republicans.” He added: “Compared with everything today, [campaigns were] very primitive” in the late 1960s but not because of technology. “I doubt it has made much difference. I think what’s made American politics so unproductive is the role of money . . . Money controls both parties. I’m an old man now, and I didn’t get this disillusioned overnight.”
