‘Inglourious Basterd’ Christoph Waltz is a Nazi everybody loves

“Inglourious Basterds” star Christoph Waltz says he’s being delightfully bothered by people who come up to him speaking odd languages or mimicking his role as charmingly sadistic Nazi colonel Hans Landa. The Oscar nominee said, “I keep getting people coming up to me speaking in strange languages. It is wonderful how people have embraced this character,” adding that he sometimes unwittingly scares others because they think he is Landa. At a luncheon thrown by Katharina Otto-Bernstein and her husband, Nathan, in their Upper East Side townhouse, Waltz — the front-runner to win for Best Supporting Actor — said that following the movie’s success, he’s been offered four plum Hollywood roles — “but none of them are villains.” Harvey Weinstein added that Waltz’s performance is so key that, “If Quentin [Tarantino] hadn’t found Christoph, the movie never would have been made.”
