Artist Kiki Smith patches up her moth-eaten designer jacket

Kiki Smith stuck to her own style at the American Folk Art Museum gala. The wealthy but frugal feminist artist told guests her Comme des Garcons jacket had been eaten by moths in her East Village studio so, “I patched over the holes with polyester.” Smith stood proud in the company of fellow honoree, couture queen Betsy Bloomingdale, and event co-chairs Laura and Richard Parsons and Yaz and Valentin Hernandez. Egyptian art collector Shafik Gabr bid $14,000 in the auction for a stay at the Parsons’ Tuscan home, while philanthropist Latifah Kosta paid $16,000 for a break at the Hernandezes’ Puerto Rico villa. The event raised more than $750,000 for the museum.
