Scarlett Johansson reveals why she’s so private

Scarlett Johansson was married to Ryan Reynolds for three years and was only photographed by his side a handful of times. Now, Johansson explains why she is so fiercely protective of her private life — because she wants to be “enigmatic.”

“My favorite actors are actors who are enigmatic and mysterious and never make the obvious choice in terms of the projects they do or who they work with or their craft,” Johansson says in the December issue of Interview magazine. “I think that the less I know about an actor, the more chance I have of allowing their own persona to kind of slip away so I can get completely lost in the character they’re playing. The more that people think they know about your personal life, the more difficult it becomes to preserve that.”

In a conversation with Arianna Huffington in the magazine, Johansson says that she goes to great lengths to stay out of the limelight. “When I’m not working or promoting something, I try to be as under-the-radar as I can,” she says.

“The Avengers” actress is now reportedly dating Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In late July, the two were spotted having dinner at SoHo restaurant Hundred Acres. And last month, sources claimed to have spotted the pair making out. But neither thespian has yet to confirm or deny the relationship.

Johansson wasn’t so lucky in keeping her May-December romance with Sean Penn under wraps earlier this year. The two were photographed together on a whirlwind trip to Mexico and were snapped holding hands at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

In Interview, Johansson also reveals that she prefers the political event to any Hollywood awards show.

“I’m already planning what I’m going to wear to the next White House Correspondents’ dinner,” she says. “Next time I go I’m going to find Anderson Cooper’s table and camp out there. My brother was totally geeked-out by Katie Couric. I think he followed her around the entire night. I was chasing after him, and I turned around, and I had a bunch of Republican senators chasing after me. Honestly, I think it’s the best party in town. I’d rather go to the White House Correspondents’ dinner than any awards show.”
